'Ilm – Science and Imagination in the Islamic World
The Arabic word ‘Ilm is often translated as “knowledge”. It is one of the most frequently occurring words in the Quran and the Hadith (recorded traditions of Prophet Muhammad), signalling the importance accorded to knowledge, both spiritual and worldly. This gallery comprises devotional as well as everyday and occasional objects used in religious, secular, and even scientific domains.
Masterpieces of sculpture, painting, and ritual objects trace the spread of the grand religions of India – Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, across trade routes from India to China, and on to Southeast Asia.
